The Bad Man was originally a three-act Western comedy by American playwright Porter
Emerson Browne. The Broadway production at the Comedy Theatre ran for 342 performances
beginning August 30, 1920. It was adapted to three feature films - in 1923 starring
Holbrook Blinn, 1930 starring Walter Huston, and again in 1941 starring Wallace Beery.

The meandering plot romanticises the exploits of Francisco "Pancho" Villa and is
basically the same as this IMDb synopsis of the 1923 film: Mexican bandit Pancho López
recognizes Gilbert Phebbs as the man who once saved his life; therefore, when Phebbs is
in danger of losing his ranch for default of mortgage payment, López determines to help
him. At the same time, Morgan Pell, intending to cheat Phebbs out of his potentially
oil-rich property, offers him a sum of money, which Phebbs conditionally accepts. When
López discovers that Phebbs and Mrs. Pell are in love he has Pell shot, then robs a
local bank, pays the mortgage, and returns the cattle he has stolen. With Mr. Pell out
of the way and the ranch secure, Phebbs and Mrs. Pell are free to marry.
